5 Fun Ideas for a Great Easter Egg Hunt
An Easter egg hunt is definitely one of the highlights of the Easter holiday season. Gather all your family and friends together for an excellent egg hunt on Easter Sunday which everybody can enjoy. Here are five fun ideas for making your Easter hunt a success!
1. Decorate or Make your Own Easter Baskets
A great way to build excitement before the egg hunt starts is for the children to make or decorate an Easter basket. You can make an Easter basket out of just about anything - a plastic container, a small cardboard box, or even paper or cardboard folded to make a basket shape (it's easy to find a template online to follow). Many craft shops or discount stores will also have small wicker baskets to which you can add your own decorations.
Once the children have chosen what they are going to make their basket out of, it's time to decorate! They can use stickers, paints, ribbons, and glitter to individualise their baskets and to add colour and sparkle. Remember to also add some shredded coloured paper at the bottom of the basket to recreate the nest to store their chocolate eggs. Alongside the basket making, your children might also like to dress up ready for the hunt. Bunny ears, fluffy pom tails, or Easter-themed face paints will always look the part. You might also persuade one of the adults to dress up as the Easter bunny!
2. Organise Your Hunt
It is an excellent idea to organise your hunt before you start to ensure that it will be fair for everyone taking part. Ideas to consider when organising your hunt include how many eggs you are going to hide, where you are going to hide them, and if you are going to colour coordinate or label the eggs. In our experience, 12 eggs is a good number to hide as it will mean a nicely full-up basket when the hunt has finished. We also recommend giving each child a different area of the garden to search in, as it may be more suitable for younger children if you hide the eggs in simple to-search and low-down areas such as behind flower pots or garden tables and chairs.
For older children, consider placing the eggs in the branches of trees or hedges or on top of fences. This variety of places will mean that everyone, young or old, will get a fair chance to find the eggs. Other ways to make the hunt as fair as possible include colour-coordinating your eggs so each child has to find a different colour, labelling the eggs so they need to look for those with their name on them, and remembering to tell the children how many eggs they each need to find. It's also a good idea to tell your Easter egg hunters which areas of the garden are out of bounds, this is important from a safety perspective and it may also save your flowerbeds from being trampled!
3. Consider Your Age Ranges
If there is a range of ages taking part, you might want to have separate hunts. Younger children may find it easier to look for giant plastic eggs (these can be found in most toy stores) which can then be swapped for chocolate when all the eggs have been found. Older children might enjoy solving puzzles and riddles or taking part in a scavenger hunt that they have to complete before finding the next egg. You may even decide to have different prizes for the different age ranges; older children would probably want to find some money or an extra gift hidden somewhere as the main prize of the hunt, while younger children might prefer a special chocolate egg to aim for.
4. Record Where You've Hidden the Eggs
Once you've hidden all the eggs around your garden, it's a good idea to record where exactly you have put them all. You don't want any to go missing or potentially be eaten by pets and you'll also know when the hunt has definitely come to an end. It will also save any frustration if someone has only found 11 eggs and they are looking for 12!
5. Come Rain or Shine
As we can never depend on the great British weather, it's best to have an alternative plan if it's raining on Easter Sunday. Easter hunts can work just as well inside the house and all these tips and hints can be applied to indoor hunts too. Eggs can be hidden all over your home and our range of beds which have storage included like the Julian Bowen Kimbo Pink Midsleeper Cabin Bed + Mattress and Chair or the Kids Avenue Estella 1 Mid Sleeper Bed with Pull Out Desk and Storage Cube Unit in Grey both have plenty of great shelves and cubby holes in which to hide easter eggs for a great indoor hunt!
